Wilda was born September 12, 1925 at home on the farm between Pep and Pettit, Texas. She was the seventh child of seven born to William Franklin Dempsey and Libbie Ellen Edmonson Dempsey. She grew up in and around Sundown and attended school there. Wilda loved volleyball and played that sport all through school. In high school she studied aviation and planned on becoming a pilot. Those plans shifted when she met a young man fresh out of Army Intelligence named Barney Quillin in February of her senior year. Barney and Wilda married just after her graduation from Sundown High on May 24, 1944. She never finished her airtime. Instead, she became a devoted wife and partnered with Barney to build their life and legacy together. Their life together produced three children: Barney Lee Jr in 1945, Sylvia Lynn in 1950, Gayla Irene in 1958, five grandchildren (one deceased), nine great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren

One of her greatest joys was witnessing her husband accept Christ as his Savior and then some years later, answer the call of God to be ordained as a Baptist minister. She enjoyed being a pastor’s wife and loved her time spent in the ministry alongside Barney as well as operating a daycare center and kindergarten for several years. She taught Sunday School, GAs, ACTEENS and was very involved in Women’s Missionary Union. She and Barney loved ministering to the young couples at the Air Force Base and college. Some of them became part of our family and have remained in touch throughout all these years.

Wilda created a home that was warm and welcoming to anyone who needed a place to be. Her table could always manage to fit one more person around it. Her kitchen was always stocked with food, snacks and drink. No one was turned away from a meal or a place to stay the night. Her one rule was “clean up what you mess up.”

Wilda loved games – cards, spoons, dominoes; music (she would say I like all kinds of music as long as it is Gospel or Country); hosting people in her home; watching her grandkids activities and serving her Lord. Her faith was unwavering and she was a constant witness to the goodness of God.

Wilda moved to Friona in March 2012 with her daughter, Gayla. Here she found her new church family at First Baptist Church and a blessing of new friends. She lived in Friona the last 14 years of her wonderful life.

Wilda was preceded in death by her parents, William and Libbie Ellen Dempsey; brothers Garland, JT and Austin; an infant brother Ernest; sisters Velma and Clemmie; grandson Brian; son-in-law Richard Adamcik; and husband of 58 years Barney Lee Quillin, Sr.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son Barney and wife Barbara of Lubbock; daughter Sylvia Adamcik of Lubbock; daughter Gayla Quillin of Friona; five grandchildren Rich Adamcik and wife Charla; Brenna and husband Mike Gaskins; Jonny Adamcik and wife Charlene; Bari Sons and husband David; greatgrandchildren Madison Adamcik, Ryan Adamcik, Aaron and wife Lindsey Gaskins , Aubrey Gaskins, Jonathan Adamcik, Franklin Adamcik, Dylan Sons, Denver Sons, Hayden and wife Tassy Sadler and Ryland and wife Brie Sadler; and, finally, great great grandchildren Evie Sons, Asher Sadler and Willow-on-the-way Sadler.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church - Friona, Texas, Bluebonnet Hospice and Home Health Friona, Texas or a favorite charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank the providers at PMC and the nurses at Bluebonnet Hospice for their special care of Wilda over the last week of her life.
